Armenian army breaks ceasefire, opens fire at Azerbaijani positions

Armenian armed forces have 11 times violated the ceasefire on the line of contact of the Azerbaijani and Armenian troops over the past 24 hours, said Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry July 19.

Armenian army was using large-caliber machine guns.

Armenian armed forces, stationed in the Chinari village of Armenia’s Berd district and on nameless heights of the Krasnoselsk district opened fire at Azerbaijani positions located in the Aghbulag village of Azerbaijan’s Tovuz district and on nameless heights of the Gadabay district.

Moreover, Azerbaijani troops underwent fire from the positions located near the Marzili village of the Aghdam district and on nameless heights of the Goranboy and Khojavand districts.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
