Russia to inform France, US about Karabakh conflict’s settlement process

27 June 2016 [16:19] - TODAY.AZ

Russia will soon inform the representatives of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairing countries about the process of settlement of the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, a source in Kremlin told RIA Novosti.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin will in coming days inform the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs about the process of settlement of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict following the meeting with Azerbaijani and Armenian presidents in St. Petersburg, said the source, adding that Putin will make phone calls.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
