Iran rejects reports about buying Russian train coaches

14 February 2016 [18:07] - TODAY.AZ

Iran rejected the reports about negotiating with Russian Uralvagonzavod for buying 5,000 train coaches, ISNA news agency reported.

So far, Iran has not held talks with Russia on the issue and the published information is completely baseless, Babak Ahmadi, deputy for Railway Fleet Affairs of Iran Railways said.

He further said that the administration’s priority is supporting domestic manufacturers of train coaches, rather than importing from abroad.

Earlier, some Russian media reported that Uralvagonzavod will supply Iran with 5,000 freight coaches, marking the start of Russian exports to the country after the removal of international sanctions against Iran.

Russia's state development bank Vnesheconombank (VEB) will provide a loan of $140 million to Uralvagonzavod to cover costs, according to the report.

Iran emerged out of international isolation in January, after it was found in compliance with last summer's nuclear agreement, paving the way for the termination of EU, UN and partial US sanctions.

Later in January, Iranian Ambassador to Russia Mehdi Sanaei said that Tehran expected that the joint Russian-Iranian projects initiated last year will be implemented in 2016.
