Azerbaijan, Serbia enjoy high level political relations

28 September 2015 [16:11] - TODAY.AZ

Political relations between Azerbaijan and Serbia stand at a high level, said Shahin Mustafayev, co-chair of the Azerbaijan-Serbia Intergovernmental Trade and Economic Cooperation Commission, Azerbaijan’s economy and industry minister.

He made the remarks Sept. 28 at a meeting of the Azerbaijan-Serbia commission in Baku.

“Our countries support each other on many issues within international organizations,” said Mustafayev.

He added that one of the key points in relations between Azerbaijan and Serbia is the two countries’ support to each other both on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and on Kosovo, which is also enshrined in a protocol on the intergovernmental commission’s meeting.

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Mustafayev also said the mutual political visits of the leaderships of Azerbaijan and Serbia are an evidence of high level political relations between the two countries.

“Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev paid a visit to Serbia,” he recalled. “Serbian presidents also made official visits to Azerbaijan.”

“I’d like to particularly note Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic’s recent visit to Azerbaijan in summer this year, during which he attended the opening of the first European Games in Baku,” said Mustafayev.

“We particularly appreciate that Serbian president found it possible to attend the opening of the Games,” the minister added.
