23 April 2014 [14:40] - TODAY.AZ
Armenian Armed Forces opened fire at the positions of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces located in the nameless heights in the Gadabay region from the positions located in the nameless heights in Armenia's Krasnoselsk region, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry reported on April 23.

The Azerbaijani Armed Forces were also fired upon from the positions located near the villages of Sarijali of the Aghdam region, Tapqaraqoyunlu of the Goranboy region, Goradiz of the Fizuli region and the nameless heights in the Goygol region.

The Azerbaijani Armed forces silenced the opposing side with return fire.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
