Over 75 000 people in Azerbaijani community of Nagorno Karabakh

The number of members of the Azerbaijani community of Nagorno Karabakh is over 75 000.

More than 29 000 people are our compatriots expelled from Shusha, 11 000 from Khojavand, 15 000 from Khankendi. The number of population of Aghdere region was not specified because this region was dissolved, but work toward it is continued. Population of this region was settled in different regions. This is very difficult process to specify the number of population and it demands long time”, chairman of the Public Union of the Azerbaijani Community of Nagorno Karabakh region of the Republic of Azerbaijan, head of the executive power of Shusha region Bayram Safarov said in his interview to the website of New Azerbaijan Party (YAP).

He said members of the Nagorno Karabakh’s Azerbaijani community were settled in all regions of Azerbaijan.

“Residents of Shusha region live in 220 settlements located in the territory of 59 regions. I don’t believe that Armenian community has more members than Azerbaijani community. A group of intellectuals visited Nagorno Karabakh recently. They held various meetings and conducted observations. I think Armenian sources published wrong statistics about the number of Armenian community in Nagorno Karabakh. Many Armenians left Nagorno Karabakh when the conflict started. If we don’t consider the people settled there during the occupation, the number of Armenians living in Nagorno Karabakh is not so much. There are low living conditions there and Armenian leadership became a trouble for these people. Armenia’s policy forced these people to migrate abroad. Currently the number of Armenians living in Karabakh decreased”.

Safarov said he believed that most of the ordinary citizens living in Nagorno Karabakh are not interested in continuation of occupation policy. “They learn about the development processes in Azerbaijan and envy because there is no development in Armenia. It has ruined economy and time works against this country. Therefore most Armenian people want to use economic development and richness of Azerbaijan and to live together with us”.
