Azerbaijan's opposition party elected new chairman of assembly

27 December 2010 [11:08] - TODAY.AZ
Arzu Samedbeyli was elected the Chairman of the Azerbaijan opposition Musavat Party's assembly on Sunday.
This decision was taken by secret ballot, which was attended by 79 people.

Last chairman of Musavat Party's assembly Sulheddin Akbar resigned on Nov. 29. Akbar explained this step as disagreement with the decision of Musavat to unite with the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan.

Musavat head Isa Gambar proposed to unite the parties following the course of Rasulzadeh-Elchibey on July 15 at the 21st anniversary event of the Popular Front of Azerbaijan. The Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan reacted first to the proposal.

New members were elected to Party's assembly. The head of the central executive office of the Musavat Party, Arif Hajili informed the candidates of voting rules before the election.

"The number of members of the assembly is 59 and the number of empty seats in it - 26. The candidate must score at least 65 votes to be elected ", Hajili said.

Nine of the 35 candidates were elected by vote. Then the Plan of activities of the Party in 2011 was adopted.

Musavat was established in October 1911 in Baku. On May 28, 1918 in Tbilisi, together with several other parties, Musavat announced Azerbaijan's independence. Due to Azerbaijan's occupation by the Red Army in 1920, Musavat moved its activities underground.

The party was relaunched on Nov. 7, 1992. Gambar was elected as the party chief. A former parliamentary speaker, Gambar ran in the 2003 presidential elections. The party has four MPs.
