“The issue of joint use of Gabala radar station by the United States and Russia have long been debated and this debate has always been, is and will benefit Azerbaijan in political terms,” MP, member of the parliament’s Security and Defense Committee and Vice Chairman of Azerbaijan’s pro-government Ana Veten party Zahid Oruj said commenting on a statement by Assistant U.S. Secretary of Defense Alexander Vershbow.
Vershbow said very recently that the U.S. considers the possibility of joint use of Russian radar in Gabala and Armavir as part of the missile defense cooperation to exchange of data on possible missile attack.
"In the past the issue related to the use of the Gabala radar station, its capabilities, strategic cooperation with Azerbaijan was discussed in detail. And even if today there is no negotiated agreement by the U.S., Russia and Azerbaijan. But still all these discussions came to our advantage Oruj said.
“As for the discussion of this issue by the United States and Russia in the context of missile defense in Europe, joint struggle against the threats in our region, I believed and still believe in the conclusion of an agreement on this issue. But many experts are skeptical about this,” he said.
“With regard to the necessity of this issue, I think that over time the external pressure of international public opinion on Iran will only intensify. The U.S. will benefit from this pressure and I think the use of the Gabala radar station will occupy an important place in this respect,” the Azerbaijani MP said.
"I believe Azerbaijan’s involvement in this matter will greatly benefit the country in terms of security interests. Clash of the same interests of such powerful countries like the United States and Russia would only harm us in our region. So I think that the formation of cooperation between the U.S. and Russia on the joint use of Gabala radar station, though some try to diminish this fact, meet our interest, and for that reason I would like them to agree on this issue.” Oruj added.
