Baku called on Yerevan to start negotiations on a peace agreement instead of making baseless statements.

“Instead of making meaningless statements, the Armenian leadership must start working on a peace agreement, as required by the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairing countries, the presidents of the world countries,” said Hikmet Hajiyev, Spokesman for Azerbaijani foreign Ministry.

Hajiyev’s comments came as Edward Nalbandian, Armenian Foreign Minister stated that Azerbaijan allegedly stalemates the negotiations.

Nalbandian, who is on a working visit to Munich, met with the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairmen on February 5. They discussed the peaceful settlement of the long-lasting Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. During the meeting Nalbandian once again accused Azerbaijan, whose 20 percent territories occupied by Armenia, for the delay of the conflict resolution.

Hajiyev said Armenia’s leadership must understand that only after the withdrawal of Armenian armed forces from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, as required by the international community and the UN Security Council resolutions, peace, security and stability can be restored in the region.

Armenia captured Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding regions from Azerbaijan in a war that followed the Soviet breakup in 1991. More than 20,000 Azerbaijanis were killed and nearly 1 million were displaced as a result of the war.

Large-scale hostilities ended with a Russia-brokered ceasefire in 1994 but Armenia continued the occupation in defiance of four UN Security Council resolutions calling for immediate and unconditional withdrawal.

Peace talks mediated by Russia, France and the U.S. have produced no results so far.
