French ambassador thanks Azerbaijan for solidarity

Pascal Monnier, French Ambassador to Baku expressed gratitude to the leadership of Azerbaijan for the solidarity with the people of France over the terrorist attack against Charlie Hebdo.

Expressing gratitude to the Azerbaijani officials for the words of sympathy and solidarity, Monnier said these killings caused deep sorrow, not only for French people, but everyone who, regardless of the political and religious views respects the values of freedom and humanity, the embassy said in a statement issued on January 27.

Immediately after the first reports of the attacks, President Ilham Aliyev expressed his condolences to President Francois Hollande and the people of the country, also First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva sent to the embassy wreath in memory of the victims and Finance Minister Samir Sharifov, on behalf of the Azerbaijani government, wrote words of encouragement in the memory book, Monnier said.

He also noted that Deputy Primer Ali Ahmadov took part in a national march in Paris, together with the political leaders of many countries on January 11 to confirm Azerbaijan’s commitment to the fight against terrorism.

France was shocked in early January with a series of terrorist attacks that began with the attack on editorial office of the Charlie Hebdo journal. Twelve people – 9 employees of the magazine and two police officers guarding the building – were killed and 11 more were injured as a result of the Charlie Hebdo attack.
