European Union was urged to actively take part in settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

The conflicts in the post-Soviet area, including the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, were discussed during the Forum of Young Leaders organized by the European Parliament in Brussels as part of the EU’s "Eastern Partnership" program.

The forum participants, including young journalists, political analysts, researchers in the field of international relations and social sciences from the Eastern Partnership and the EU countries were informed about the nature of the conflict, the negotiations for its settlement and the current situation.

The discussion was held under the chairmanship of the well-known expert in the field of conflict transformation and peace building Natalya Mirimanova. She expressed regret that the EU is making insufficient efforts to resolve this problem.

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict emerged in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Since a lengthy war in the early 1990s that displaced over one million Azerbaijanis, Armenian armed forces have occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent regions. Long-standing efforts by U.S., Russian and French mediators have been largely fruitless so far.

The UN Security Council's four resolutions on Armenian withdrawal have not been enforced to this day.

Mirimanova noted that the EU must more actively participate in resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

“The longer any conflict remains unresolved, the more difficult is to solve it,” she said.

The conflicts in the breakaway regions of Georgia, Transnistria, the situation in Crimea and eastern regions of Ukraine were also discussed during the forum.
