Azerbaijani analyst: Armenia will be forced to sign a peace treaty sooner or later

23 September 2010 [16:07] - TODAY.AZ
"Serzh Sargsyan’s remarks are meant for undemanding public in an attempt to raise himself in their eyes. The most important for the Armenian president is to stay in power at any price. Lately, Armenian leader’s opponents have got stronger and they enjoy great support among citizens. Sargsyan is aware that he may not stay in office,” Azerbaijani political analyst Rustam Mammadov said commenting on Armenian President Sargsyan’s recent remarks at an official ceremony to mark anniversary of Armenia’s Independence Day.

Sargsyan said attempts “to intimidate Armenian side” are “senseless” adding that “Armenia has a difficult, but the only right path” which is also a way “towards independence of Nagorno-Karabakh.”

"Sargsyan seeks to torpedo Nagorno-Karabakh talks in order to get time for rehabilitation. Therefore I think he addressed these words to his own people to give them a false sense of self-sufficiency, nothing more," Mammadov noted.

The expert also commented on Sargsyan’s remarks accusing Azerbaijan of frequent ceasefire violations and alleged “provocative and terrorists actions” on the troops’ contact line.

"By such allegations Sargsyan tries to justify the losses the Armenian army has suffered on the frontline. He is also trying to instill a feeling of hatred against the Azerbaijanis in ordinary people. This is policy aimed at undermining negotiations. Of course, by doing so he plays up to the hands of nationalist forces in Armenia and wants to appear in a role of a national hero,” the analyst said.

Rustam Mammadov also commentd on statements made Tuesday by Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian during his speech at the UN headquarters. Armenian minister complained that Azerbaijan, ostensibly, "continues to reject the proposal regarding the agreement on the nonuse of force or threat of force."

"What is the focus of Armenia's foreign policy?" All the years of occupation of Azerbaijani lands Yerevan has tried to lay blame for all its sins on Azerbaijan. Armenia has committed aggression, but now it tries to describe our state as an aggressor. This is their old ineffective method. The world is tired of such lies. In my opinion, it is obvious that the international community does not support Armenia’s stance.”

“Azerbaijan is perseveringly and patiently waits for a fiasco of this country, and it will happen soon. Because sooner or later, all foreign forces supporting Armenia will be get bored. Clearly, it makes no sense to support  stubborn Armenia. So, time will come when an operation to enforce a peace will be inevitable. Sooner or later Armenia will be forced to sign a peace treaty. And we are waiting for this moment. Though Azerbaijan’s army is ready to liberate its lands right now, this still needs international approval,” analyst said.
