The leaders of countries drew attention to the settlement of international conflicts at the 71st session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Speaking at the event, the presidents of Latvia and Estonia stressed the urgency for resolution of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Stability and security of Europe’s eastern neighbors remain one of the strategic priorities for Latvia, the country’s President Raimonds V?jonis said on September 21 at the session.

Settlement of conflicts in Transnistria, Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Nagorno-Karabakh should be an important focus of the international agenda, V?jonis noted in his speech.

He emphasized that all countries must fulfill their obligations within the international law and respect the borders of sovereign states.

In his speech at the session, Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves reminded that the ban on the use of force and the principle of the inviolability of state frontiers are the basis of the United Nations Charter.

The president noted that "frozen" conflicts still continue in Nagorno-Karabakh and Transnistria.

Ilves said about the necessity of creating mechanisms that will ensure respect for norms of international law. He believed that if the UN does not begin to work in this direction, it could lose its relevance.

Azerbaijan and Armenia for over two decades have been locked in conflict, which emerged over Armenian territorial claims. Since the 1990s, Armenian armed forces have occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent regions.

Armenia ignores four UN Security Council resolutions on immediate withdrawal from the occupied territory of Azerbaijan, thus keeping tension high in the region.
