Baku, Moscow stress strong ground for high-level cooperation

Azerbaijani and Russian high-ranking officials have discussed the development of ties within the framework of political consultations between foreign ministries’ of two countries.

Khalaf Khalafov, deputy Azerbaijan’s foreign minister met Alexei Pavlovsky, Russian MFA’s Fourth CIS Department director on May 13, AzerTac news agency reported.

Khalafov expressed his confidence on the current level of political ties between Azerbaijan and Russia, noting that the cooperation in economic, trade, social and humanitarian areas between the two countries are dynamically improving.

Touching upon the importance of official visits in strengthening bilateral ties, Khalafov stressed there is a strong ground to bring the Azerbaijani-Russian bilaterally beneficial cooperation into the higher level.

The sides also discussed improvement of the legal framework sharing proposals on the issue.

Pavlovsky, for his part, applauded Azerbaijani and Russian officials’ significant role in rapid development of relations between the two countries, noting that the Azerbaijani and Russian presidents’ meeting during the celebration of the 70th anniversary of Victory over fascism in Moscow on May 9 is a good example of the friendship between the two countries.

Khalafov further noted that Azerbaijan is a serious ally of Russia in the Southern Caucasus region.

He also spoke of the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, highlighting the threats that conflict possess to regional stability and security.

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict emerged in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. A lengthy war in the early 1990s displaced over one million Azerbaijanis from their native lands. Armenian armed forces have occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent regions.

Khalafov stressed that the solution of the conflict would only be possible in the case the occupied territories would be returned. He also underlined Russia’s important role as co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group in the settlement of the conflict.

Polad Bulbuloglu, Azerbaijani Ambassador to Russia and his Russian colleague Ambassador Vladimir Dorokhin were present at the meeting.

Azerbaijan and Russia established diplomatic relations on April 4, 1992.

Russia is the main trade partner of Azerbaijan in the CIS. It also ranks first among the countries importing from Azerbaijan.
