Azerbaijan joins International Organization of Legal Metrology

Azerbaijan's State Committee on Standardization, Metrology and Patents will get a membership status at the International Organization of Legal Metrology and join the General Conference on Weights and Measures.

Head of the state committee Oktay Abbasov said in a press conference that the membership at the organization is of great importance for the development of Azerbaijan's metrological industry and its general economic progress. "Signing agreements with other countries based on the mutual recognition of standards will ensure quality of the related measures," he noted.

Abbasov added that it is necessary to improve the respective legislative base to acknowledge the international standards.

Membership at the International Organization of Legal Metrology and the General Conference on Weights and Measures is a basis for joining the Metrological Convention and signing agreements on the mutual recognition of the national measuring standards, calibration and measure certificates issued by the national metrological institutes. It will enable Azerbaijan's national standards to be internationally acknowledged.

The General Conference on Weights and Measures will launch its 25th meeting in Versailles palace on November 18. The State Committee on Standardization, Metrology and Patents will represent Azerbaijan at the meeting, which is held every four years.

IOLM was established in 1955 under the relevant convention on its establishment that was signed in Paris on October 12, 1955. The organization stands for harmonizing the metrology rules applied in the member-states. It also aims to provide assistance in the elimination of trade barriers through the coordinated legal, administrative and technical procedures for measure instruments, which are applied in trade operations or regulating activities.
