Azerbaijan voices readiness to assist China in cargo transportation

Azerbaijan is ready to provide any support to China in the cargo transportation through its territory, Head of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC (ADY) Javid Gurbanov said.

He made the remarks in Baku during a meeting with Deputy Director General of Chengdu International Railway Services Co. Zhang Jing.

Gurbanov noted that Azerbaijan uses all its opportunities to increase the efficiency and competitiveness of cargo transportation through its territory.

Zhang Jing, for his part, expressed interest in using transport corridors passing through Azerbaijan for delivering the Chinese goods to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Turkey and Georgia.

Meanwhile, China has agreed to work over increase of efficiency of cargo transportation through Azerbaijan.

The relevant protocol on prospects of cooperation was signed in Baku during the meeting of Gurbanov and Kong Guohua, deputy general director of the Commercial Department of Chinese company Ningxia.

Guohua underlined China’s interest in Azerbaijan’s opportunities in the field of transport and logistics. In his opinion, the port in Alat [new Port of Baku] has the potential to turn into the center of transportation from China to Europe, Iran and Russia and back.

The world’s second largest economy, China pays a great attention to cooperation Azerbaijan through which the Trans-Caspian International Transport Corridor runs.

China wants to make joint efforts with Azerbaijan for promoting the 'One Belt, One Road' strategy as the development of cargo transportation by containers to Europe is the priority for China.

Ukraine-Georgia-Azerbaijan-Kazakhstan-China route, officially known as Trans-Caucasus-Asia transport corridor or New Silk Road, and which includes ferries of the Black and Caspian Seas (Illichivsk-Batumi and Alat-Aktau Port) is believed to be cheaper in comparison with the traditional overland route.

The Trans-Caspian International Transport Route runs through China, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia and then through Turkey and Ukraine goes to Europe. This is a multimodal corridor using railway, maritime and roadways for transporting goods.

In February 2016, Ukraine and Lithuania signed a memorandum on the accession of the container train 'Viking' to the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route from Europe to China through Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan.
