Armenia has become 102nd in the ranking of gender equality among 144 countries of the world. The country received 0.669 points in the Global Gender Gap Index 2016 and located at the bottom of the list between Hungary and Brunei.

The ranking has been published on October 26 in an annual report of the World Economic Forum (WEF). It presents the status, rights and role of women and men in four key areas, which are education, health, economy and politics.

The position of Armenia is not even surprising – it was always obvious that Armenian women stay in the shadow of men and do not receive any support from authorities to rectify the situation.

In detail, the wages of women in Armenia are significantly lower than men’s salaries, the research states. The country took 50th place by this indicator in the ranking.

Moreover, women and men’s rights utterly differ in the economic life (69th place), and on possession of political power (125th place). No wonder, only 11 percent of Armenian Parliament and Ministries’ positions are represented with women.

By the opportunities in the health sector Armenia also lacks behind – the country holds the second-to-last, 143rd place, because of a huge difference in sex rate at birth in favor of males due to abortion.

Thus, for the last decade, Armenia stepped back by almost 20 positions in the ranking of WEF – from 84th in 2006 to the current 102nd.

Furthermore, Armenian women suffer from domestic violence, which is constantly being stated by the Armenian Coalition to Stop Violence against Women. A total of 30 women were killed by their partners over the past five years, which resulted in 45 children left without mothers.

In addition, 31 cases of domestic violence were detected in the country over the first half of 2016. This figure has increased by 2.4 times compared to the same period of 2015.

Apparently, the Armenian government turns a blind eye to all these problems instead of improving its society and provide women and men with equal rights. However, their attitude is quite ‘justified’ – after all, the authorities of the country almost completely consists of men.
