A positive progress in the prevention of unlawful interference by local executive authorities in the electoral process is observed in Azerbaijan, OSCE Baku Office head Ali Bilge Cankorel said today at the informational sessions "Inadmissibility of unlawful interference in the electoral process."
"Institute for Democracy published a report stating that a progress is observed in this sphere in Azerbaijan," Cankorel said.
According to him, this year the parliamentary elections are another chance for Azerbaijan to demonstrate the progress in the electoral process to the world. Cankorel noted that during the previous municipal elections, there were some facts of interference by heads of the executive power and district election commissions in the electoral process. It is necessary to fully prevent such facts in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Informational sessions are held upon the OSCE Baku Office's initiative with the support of the Central Election Commission (CEC) and the Presidential Administration of Azerbaijan. The session discusses the inadmissibility of unlawful interference of heads of executive power and chairmen of district election commissions in the electoral process.
Sessions will also be held in Shirvan on Sept. 21, Mingachevir on Sept. 22 and Nakhchivan on Sept. 24. Parliamentary elections are scheduled for Nov. 7. Previous legislative elections were held in November 2005. Parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan are held by the majority system in 125 electoral constituencies.
