Armed conflicts have caused much suffering, displacement and destruction in the OSCE area of operation, and these conflicts have no military solution, the Austrian Foreign Minister, OSCE Chairperson-in-Office Sebastian Kurz said on February 22, while addressing the UN Security Council.

The diplomat said all conflicts must be solved through political means.

Kurz also noted his country will support efforts directed at peaceful solution to the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

“As the chair-country, Austria will support all attempts to achieve a peaceful solution to the conflicts in the OSCE area, in particular, the conflicts in Georgia, Transnistria and Nagorno-Karabakh,” Kurz said.

Armenia broke out a lengthy war against Azerbaijan laying territorial claims on its South Caucasus neighbor. Since a war in the early 1990s, Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan's territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding regions. More than 20,000 Azerbaijanis were killed and over 1 million were displaced as a result of the large-scale hostilities.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding districts.
