Azerbaijan, as one of the founders of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC), understands the organization’s important role in the region and is interested in enhancing the effectiveness of its activity, said Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov.

Mammadyarov made the remarks addressing an informal meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the BSEC member states on the sidelines of the 71st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, US.

Azerbaijan supports the reforming of the BSEC and believes that this process will contribute to the organization’s development in line with global realities, said the minister.

He noted that Azerbaijan jointly with other BSEC member countries and international partners contributes to regional development by initiating and carrying out conscientious energy and transportation projects.

Azerbaijan intends to continue its efforts to deepen the cooperation between the member countries of the organization, to contribute to the sustainable development of cooperation in the region, added Mammadyarov.

Despite the existence of wide opportunities for regional cooperation, challenges against peace and security still create obstacles for sustainable development in the region, said the minister.

The ongoing military aggression by neighboring Armenia against Azerbaijan and the violation of international law and UN Security Council resolutions in a rough form by Armenia, the occupation of 20 percent of Azerbaijani territories poses a serious threat to regional cooperation and sustainable development, he noted.

Mammadyarov went on to add that the withdrawal of Armenian armed forces from the occupied Azerbaijani territories and the return of refugees and internally displaced persons to their homes will make a great contribution to peace and stability in the region and will create great opportunities for cooperation in the BSEC region.
