Defense Ministry: Azerbaijani armed forces fully adhering to ceasefire

22 July 2016 [14:20] - TODAY.AZ

Azerbaijan’s armed forces are fully adhering to ceasefire and are complying with humanitarian norms and principles of international law, they do not target Armenian civilians and facilities, Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry told Trend July 22.

“In order to divert the attention of its population and international community from the ongoing clashes in Armenia, that country’s authorities have once again spread false information saying that allegedly Azerbaijani armed forces broke the ceasefire and fired at the Armenian civilians,” said the ministry.

Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry said that by spreading such information, Armenian authorities aim to exacerbate the situation along the line of contact and justify their planned provocations beforehand.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
