Armenia violates ceasefire with Azerbaijan

Over the past 24 hours, Armenian military 44 times violated the ceasefire on various parts of the contact line between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops, the Defense Ministry of Azerbaijan said Jan. 20.

Armenians stationed in the villages of Aygepar and Chinari of Armenia’s Berd district opened fire on the Azerbaijani armed forces’ positions located in the villages of Alibeyli and Kokhanebi of Tovuz district.

Azerbaijani armed forces were also fired at from the positions near the Goyarkh, Chilebord, Gizil Oba villages of the Terter district, Tapgaragoyunlu village of Goranboy district, Shikhlar, Novruzlu, Bash Gervend, Yusifjanly, Sarijali, Garagashli villages of Aghdam district, Horadiz, Ashaghi Seyidahmadli, Ashagi Abdurrahmanli villages of Fizuli district, and the Mehdili village of Jabrail district.

Aside from that, the Azerbaijani soldiers came under the Armenians’ fire from the positions on the nameless heights in the Goranboy, Khojavend and Fizuli districts.

The opposing side was silenced with return fire.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
