Armenia violates ceasefire with Azerbaijan over 50 times in a day

Over the past 24 hours, Armenian military 51 times violated ceasefire on various parts of line of contact between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said Jan. 16.

Armenian armed forces stationed in the Vazashen village of Armenia’s Ijevan district opened fire at Azerbaijani military’s positions on the nameless heights of Gazakh district.

Armenians also opened fire from positions in the Armenian Berd district’s Aygepar village at the Azerbaijani positions in the villages of Alibayli and Hajialili of Tovuz district.

Azerbaijani army positions also came under fire from the positions near the Goyarkh village of Tartar district, Tapgaragoyunlu village of Goranboy district, Yusifjanli, Shikhlar, Shuraabad, Kangarli, Javahirli, Merzili, Novruzlu, Shirvanli, Sarijali, Bash Garvand villages of Aghdam district, Kuropatkino village of Khojavand district, Horadiz, Garakhanbayli, Ashagi Seyidahmadli, Ashagi Abdurrahmanli villages of Fizuli district, and Mehdili village of Jabrail district.

Aside from that, Armenians were firing from positions on the nameless heights in Goranboy, Khojavand, Fuzuli and Jabrail districts.

The opposing side was silenced with return fire.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
