02 December 2014 [14:40] - TODAY.AZ

Over the past 24 hours, the Armenian armed forces violated the ceasefire with Azerbaijan 43 times at various parts of the contact line of Azerbaijani and Armenian troops, Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry reported on December 2.

The Armenian military stationed in the villages of Berkaber and Vazashen of the Ijevan and Barekamavan Noyemberyan districts of Armenia, opened fire at the positions of the Azerbaijani armed forces located in the villages of Gizilhajili, Gaymagli and the nameless heights in Azerbaijan’s Gazakh district.

The positions of the Azerbaijani military were also fired at from the positions near the Javahirli, Marzili, Kangarli villages of the Aghdam district, the Kuropatkino village of the Khojavand district, the Horadiz, Garakhanbayli, Ashagi Veysalli, Ashagi Seyidahmadli villages of the Fizuli district and the Mehdili village of the Jabrail district.

The Armenians were also firing from their positions on the nameless heights in the Goy-Gol, Khojavand and Fizuli districts.

The enemy was silenced with return fire.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
