EU hails CEC’s decision to approve Ilgar Mammadov as presidential candidate

European Union's Ambassador to Azerbaijan Roland Kobia welcomes the decision of the Central Election Commission of Azerbaijan to approve Ilgar Mammadov, Head of REAL movement as a candidate for the upcoming Presidential elections to exercise his civil and political rights, EU Baku office said, Trend reported.

"As Mr Mammadov is still in pre-trial detention, I take this as a positive signal of the efforts of the Central Election Commission to provide for a fair and inclusive approval process," Kobia said.

He noted that this procedure will lead to further measures putting candidates in an effective position to campaign and run.

"This should contribute to a democratic election process on the basis of international standards, and to Azerbaijan's international commitments in this field," Kobia said.

Presidential elections in Azerbaijan will be held on October 9.
