Just few days ago Azerbaijan was bathing in beautiful sunshine following the hottest late September on record.

But the weather in the country has taken quite a turn on weekend with daytime temperatures cut in half, and torrential downpours set to sweep across the country, bringing an abrupt end to clear blue skies.

Temperatures have dropped from about 35C to 15C in some areas, and there could even be a touch of frost in the northern regions in the week.

Since 1881, there has been no sharp drop in air temperature in Baku and Absheron peninsula. The temperature dropped from 35 C degrees to 20 C degrees, said Maharram Hasanov.

The deputy director of the Institute of Geography of ANAS, Doctor of Philosophy in Geography told Trend that the hydrometeorological station was built in Baku in 1881.

“There has never been such a sharp change of weather in September since that time," he said. “Such weather is a rarity. Similar weather conditions were observed in Baku only in 1996 and 2003.”

Unstable weather conditions are expected to continue in the country with heavy rains and even snow in several areas.

On October 2, snow fell on high mountainous areas - Khinalig, Giriz, Shahdagh.  The snow depth reached 17 cm in Khinalig, 7sm - in Giriz and 3sm in Leze.

The amount of precipitation hit 3-39 mm in Baku and Absheron peninsula, 9-110 in Lankaran-Astara region, 9-70 in the Greater Caucasus, 8-56 in Central Lowland regions, 22-35 in the Lesser Caucasus, 8-25 in Gazakh-Ganja zone and 2-10 in Nakhchivan AR.
