PACE adopts resolution on Georgia

14 April 2011 [18:27] - TODAY.AZ
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe adopted a resolution on Georgia with 130 votes. The text was prepared by CE rapporteurs Castriot Islam and Michael Jensen.

"The resolution says Georgia’s territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia are occupied by Russia, and human rights violations are recorded there," the Georgian delegation reported.

After submitting the report, debates were held. The Georgian delegation attended. They thanked the rapporteurs for their work.

The head of the delegation, PACE Vice President Petre Tsiskarishvili, drew attention to the issue of refugees, the protection of their rights and how to improve their social conditions. He said their lives have been intolerable until recently, but the Georgian government managed to improve their conditions.

Jensen spoke about democratic reforms in Georgia.

"The CE is well aware of what happened in 2008. Despite this, Georgia follows the right course. Today, it is a more democratic and open country," he said.

Military actions were launched in the unrecognized republic of South Ossetia in August 2008. Georgian troops entered Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia and later Russian troops occupied the city and drove the Georgian military back to Georgia. Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia on Aug. 26 and established diplomatic relations with them on Sept. 9, 2008.
