U.S. Embassy in Baku explained the reasons for closure of the International Republican Institute (IRI) in Azerbaijan.

Public Affairs Officer of the U.S. Embassy Baku Terry Davidson said the United States has been a solid supporter of democratic reforms and development in Azerbaijan since the country gained independence.
“U.S. commitment in support of political reforms and strengthening of democratic institutions remains firm. In recent years the primary U.S. government partners have included the International Republican Institute (IRI), the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES)”, Davidson said.
“USAID has just completed its periodic review of programs and asked for new proposals. In that internal process, both NDI and IFES submitted proposals and they will continue to collaborate with the embassy. IRI did not take part, and, as a result, will stop operations in Azerbaijan,” Davidson added.
“IRI has made a significant contribution to our efforts to strengthen democracy here.”
IRI Office in Baku will end its activity on Nov. 30.
