The UN resolutions demanding for unconditional withdrawal of the Armenian troops from Nagorno-Karabakh region must be fulfilled, said a top Slovenian official.

Karl Erjavec, Slovenian Foreign Minister, said his country backed the peaceful resolution of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh.

"The efforts of the Minsk Group of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe are of great importance. The resolutions of the Unite Nations that were adopted many years ago must be fulfilled. Azerbaijan stands for stability in the region,” Erjavec said in an interview with AzerTag news agency.

He described Azerbaijan as a peace guarantor in the region, reiterating the peaceful resolution as the best option to end the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.

Erjavec went on to hail the close ties between Slovenia and Azerbaijan.

He added that he is planning to visit Azerbaijan at the top of a large delegation.

"Trade turnover between our countries stands at approximately $15 million. But this falls behind our potential. We can increase the figure. We have wide opportunities for cooperation in the fields of energy, pharmaceutics, automobile industry, etc,” he said.

This year will see the founding of an Azerbaijani-Slovenian economic cooperation commission, Erjavec noted.

"We are also conducting negotiations on signing agreements in the fields of culture and education," he said, adding that Azerbaijan's Education Minister Mikayil Jabbarov will visit Slovenia in near future.

Erjavec put a special stress on political ties between Azerbaijan and Slovenia. He recalled President Ilham Aliyev`s attending a ceremony to open a museum of legendary Mikhaylo, a famous Azerbaijani guerilla in the Great Patriotic War, in Slovenia in 2011.

"We plan to open our embassy in Azerbaijan. I believe that the embassy will be opened in 2016," he noted.

Erjavec revealed Slovenia's interest in joining the energy projects initiated by Azerbaijan, whom he called an important partner of the European Union.

He also welcomed the role of recently-opened Honorary Consulate of Slovenia in Azerbaijan in developing relations between the two countries.

Milan Jazbec, Slovenian Ambassador to Azerbaijan (based in Ankara), has earlier said Azerbaijan and Slovenia enjoyed quite good relations, and there were no unsettled issues between them.

He said constant active dynamics are observed in political relations between the two countries, which support common views on international issues.

Slovenia recognized Azerbaijan’s independence in December, 1991 and diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in February, 1996.
