“The decision of the assessment mission may play a crucial role in raising awareness about situation in Karabakh region,” member of the Azerbaijani Parliament’s legal policy and state-building committee Azay Guliyev said.
The MP was commenting on OSCE assessment mission's upcoming visit to Azerbaijan's occupied lands together with UN specialists.
“Baku's position on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is strong also in legal terms. But this does not downplay the importance of the visit of the assessment mission to the occupied territories of Azerbaijan. Their conclusion on the situation in the region could cause a serious blow to the already tainted image of Armenia in the world. Moreover, this finding may be used when discussing the Karabakh issue in the UN General Assembly. In March 2008, the UN adopted a resolution on the situation in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan. Therefore, Armenia does it utmost so that its occupation of foreign territory will not be discussed on an international scale. But our diplomacy is aimed at the opposite," the MP said.
“Talking about illegal actions of Armenia in the occupied territories, Guliyev said that according to available information, the Armenian Diaspora and businessmen are hatching plans to resettle 300 thousand Armenians from other regions and countries in Karabakh for 10 years,” the MP noted.
“Earlier, Armenians immigrated to Azerbaijan’s occupied territories from Syria, Lebanon and Iran. Armenians resettled in Karabakh were provided with funds and land plots. All these facts are highly undesirable for Azerbaijan, and the assessment mission should fix them. But any solution by this mission will be ineffective without resorting to coercion to make Armenia to fulfill it. At least, Armenia should be imposed economic sanctions, no less harsh than those the international community adopted against Iran. Otherwise, tensions will always be present in our region with the likelihood of resumption of war being high. In any case, the responsibility for the escalation of the conflict lies in Yerevan," the parliamentarian added.
