03 October 2009 [11:35] - TODAY.AZ
“This is a positive factor that today Russia and the U.S. are ready to discuss joint use of Gabala radar station,” member of the Azerbaijani Milli Mejlis (Parliament) Aydin Mirzazade said commenting on the statement by U.S. Undersecretary of State Ellen Tosher that Washington would like to cooperate with Moscow on missile defense.

Tosher stated earlier that "the U.S. is interested in clarifying mutual benefits of Russia's proposals made in 2007-2008 abouting using the data of the Russia-leased Gabala radar in Azerbaijan and Armavir radar in southern Russia."

"Joint use Gabala radar station will provide an opportunity to ease tension between the West and Russia,” Mirzazade said.

"But, in addition, the Caucasus, particularly Azerbaijan, would in this case be a ground for joint cooperation and joint projects. It must be noted that before they offered the Gabala radar as a joint project, Azerbaijan’s consent was asked,” he said.

“Azerbaijan has agreed to use its territory and its facility in a joint project. We are interested in a solution of the issue,” the MP said.
"Meantime, if the United States and Russia find another option outside of Azerbaijan, we will welcome this decision. But, I believe that the option of the Gabala radar station is most acceptable,” he added.

"First, the Gabala radar station has a geographically convenient location, secondly, is already has established system, and its modernization need to invest small amount of investments,” the MP said.

"Azerbaijan is a country in which government and society approves of use of this radar. Azerbaijan pursues a policy of peace, a policy of contributing to international security. Azerbaijan and its leadership have always backed initiatives aimed at easing tensions and ensuring security in the world. In addition, the Caucasus has turned from a place of confrontation to a place of cooperation,” he said.

“The fact that from time to time Moscow and Washington voice statements on the joint use of Gabala radar station is a positive factor. Mutual visits and talks on this subject will eventually lead to shared use of the radar,” Mirzazade said.
