Azerbaijani MP believes that Europe’s current problems, including the refugee problem, could be avoided if the international community has not ignored the Armenian aggression against Azerbaijan and the problem of refugees and internally displaced people.

Samad Seyidov, who heads the Azerbaijani delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, said if Europe in time paid attention to the fact of occupation of Azerbaijani territories and the problem of one million refugees and IDPs, it could avoid the current problems.

Seyidov further told Trend that during the winter session, the Azerbaijani delegation intends to discuss two documents only within the laws of the Council of Europe.

"We always act exclusively as part of the law," he said.

While commenting on the issue whether the draft resolutions on Azerbaijan will be approved at the PACE winter session, he stressed that everything depends on Europe’s awareness of the danger to the international community following Armenia’s impunity.

The PACE Committee on Political Affairs approved a draft resolution on November 4, urging to withdraw the Armenian armed forces from Nagorno-Karabakh and other occupied territories of Azerbaijan, as well as to recognize the full sovereignty of Azerbaijan over the mentioned territory as part of the Minsk process.

The PACE Committee on Social Affairs also adopted the draft resolution entitled "Intentional deprivation of the inhabitants of the Azerbaijani border regions of water" on November 23.

The Armenian side attempts to hinder the adoption of the draft resolutions on Azerbaijan during the winter session of the PACE.

Seyidov said the Armenian side has no logical arguments to prevent the adoption of two PACE draft resolutions on Azerbaijan. “The law and international law are on Azerbaijan’s side.”

He added that the draft resolutions have been already approved for discussion as part of the PACE winter session.

"The Armenian side will commit various provocative actions to try to derail the approval of the resolutions,” he said. “We expect any illogical acts, violations, yell during speeches, other attempts to disrupt the adoption of resolutions."

Seyidov also did not rule out that the Armenians will try to bribe MEPs and lobby.

Noting that it is very difficult to struggle against a player who does not act according to the rules, the MP said if the Armenians have acted in accordance with the international law, Azerbaijani lands would have been released. “After all, the international law is on the side of Azerbaijan.

Armenia and Azerbaijan fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a fragile ceasefire in 1994. More than 20,000 Azerbaijanis were killed and over 1 million people were displaced as a result of the large-scale hostilities. Since the war, the Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan's territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding regions.

Armenia continues the occupation in defiance of four UN Security Council resolutions calling for the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of armed forces.

Peace talks brokered by mediators from Russia, France and the U.S. have so far produced no results.
