Azerbaijani Defense Ministry has dismissed as baseless the recent statements by the Armenian defense minister and president.

The Ministry told Trend on January 27 that Armenian Defense Ministry Seyran Ohanian’s recent statements-full of threats and intimidation-are aimed at diverting the attention of the Armenian nation from the difficult situation in the country.

On Ohanian’s statement about the withdrawal of snipers from the frontline, the Ministry noted that it can only be the fruit of a sick imagination.

“Unfortunately, there are international organizations and institutions that agree with such ideas. The question is why snipers must be withdrawn from the frontline? What about other military elements - military vehicles, mortars, grenade launchers and other? Let’s imagine that such an agreement is reached, then how will be the execution process controlled? Who can guarantee that the Armenian side, which shoots at children, women and the elderly, as well as some objects that have no military value, will comply with the reached agreement ?” the Ministry said.

Armenia occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent regions, after laying territorial claims against its South Caucasus neighbor that had caused a lengthy war in the early 1990s.

Also, responding to Armenian defense minister’s statement about the crash of a military helicopter, the Ministry said Ohanyan’s admission associated with the downing military helicopter in the occupied Azerbaijani territories, confirmed that the military equipment belonged to Armenia’s Air Force.

Two Mi-24 attack helicopters of the Armenian air forces approached and made attack maneuvers in the immediate vicinity of the positions of the Azerbaijani armed forces nearby the village of Kengerly in the occupied Aghdam region on November 12 . One of the helicopters was shot down on the very same occupied territory.

Earlier, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said the downed helicopter belonged to air base No. 15 stationed in Erebuni military base near Yerevan, and its crew members were military servicemen of the Armenian armed forces that is another manifestation of Armenia's aggression, its direct involvement in the occupation of the territories and continued use of force against Azerbaijan.

“The enemy must understand that the only solution to this conflict is the unconditional withdrawal of Armenian armed forces from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan in compliance with the resolutions and decisions adopted by international organizations,” the Ministry said.

The Ministry warned that otherwise, expansionist forces will suffer even greater losses and the criminal military-political regime in Armenia bears responsibility for all of this, including future provocations.

The Armenian armed forces have recently increased tension on the contact line of two countries troops with attempts to attack the Azerbaijani positions. They violated the ceasefire regime with Azerbaijan over 100 times during past several days.

Armenian sabotage and reconnaissance groups attempted to attack the positions of the Azerbaijani army along the frontline and on the contact line between Armenian and Azerbaijani troops, Azerbaijani Defense Ministry reported on January 26. Three servicemen of the Azerbaijani army were martyred and some others wounded in clashes with Armenian sabotage groups which were forced to retreat after sustaining casualties.
