An Azerbaijani MP slammed international community, particularly the U.S. over demonstrating double standards towards Azerbaijan.

Siyavush Novruzov, who is also the deputy acting secretary of the ruling Yeni Azerbaijan Party, said on October 28 that the United States, as the co-chairman of OSCE Minsk Group, has made no statements about the necessity of returning of the occupied Azerbaijani territories over the past 20 years.

Armenia captured Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding districts from Azerbaijan in a war that followed the Soviet breakup in 1991. More than 20,000 Azerbaijanis were killed and nearly 1 million were displaced as a result of the war.

The large-scale hostilities ended with a Russia-brokered ceasefire in 1994 but Armenia continued the occupation in defiance of four UN Security Council resolutions calling for immediate and unconditional withdrawal. Peace talks mediated by Russia, France and the U.S. have produced no results so far.

Novruzov said that despite the repeated democratic elections in Azerbaijan, the United States have not yet referred to this fact in its statements.

"This is another clear example of the dual policy of international organizations and major powers. Therefore, we propose to send an appeal to the co-chair countries of the OSCE Minsk Group and demand a clarification of these issues on behalf of the Azerbaijani parliament," Novruzov said.

He went on to say that the U.S. issued a statement immediately after Ukraine election calling it fair and transparent.

"We do not interfere in this election, it is their internal matter. But it is impossible to remain silent when we see such attitude. We all know how and under which conditions the parliamentary election was held there. But the U.S. leadership, which promotes democracy and justice in the world, declared the validity of the election right away and expressed their readiness to help return of Crimea to Ukraine," Novruzov said.
