Iran and Azerbaijan intend to expand cooperation in the field of postal services, said Mehdi Mohtashami, the head of the secretariat of the Azerbaijan-Iran intergovernmental commission.

He said that Iran established a postal service center in Tabriz, through which it is possible to send to and receive post from Azerbaijan.

The document on cooperation in the field of postal services was inked between the two countries, as part of the visit of Iranian president to Azerbaijan.

“Currently, cooperation covers areas such as post sending, as well as freight and cargo transportation. We hope that the cooperation will also provide the opportunity for cooperation with third countries,” Mohtashami said.

One of the cooperation areas could be the provision of postal services to businesses in border areas, according to the Communications and High Technologies Ministry.

The sides also consider issuing of joint stamps.

Iran’s postal operator learned from the experience of Azerbaijan’s postal operator in rendering the financial services to the population.

The two sides have been cooperating in the field of postal services as part of a memorandum between the two countries’ Communications and High Technologies Ministries signed in 2009.

The memorandum envisages regular bilateral meetings. The sides agreed on the postal services from Azerbaijan through Iran to Iraq and the Persian Gulf countries.

Azerbaijan and Iran have had diplomatic relations since 1918. Iran recognized Azerbaijan's independence in 1991, and diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1992.
