50 percent of salt on Azerbaijani market not iodinated

Azerbaijanis can once again encounter problem of iodine shortage as 50 percent of salt on the local markets is not iodinated, Free Consumers Union said.
Medical examination revealed iodine shortage in 75 percent of Azerbaijani population in 2000, union chairman Eyyub Huseynov said.

As a result, Bill on Iodinated Salt for Disease Prevention of January 2003 was adopted which banned sale of non-iodinated salt in Azerbaijan.

The re-examination in 2009 showed that 15 percent of population face iodine shortage, he said.

“Iodine shortage can pose a danger for people’s health again as 50 percent of salt on the domestic market is not iodinated,” Huseynov added.

The shortage or lack of iodine in salt may impair physical and psychological development of children by reducing intelligence. Every day a person needs 100 ml / gr. iodine, which goes to the human body with of salt, candidate of medical sciences Aydin Mammadov said.
