Baku was selected Islamic culture capital for its rich culture, history: OIC secretary general

Baku has been selected capital of the Islamic culture for its rich culture and history, renowned thinkers, poets and philosophers who lived and created in Azerbaijan, Organization of the Islamic Conference Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu said in his interview with Trend News.

Baku has been selected Islamic Culture Capital 2009.

The conference of the heads of the law enforcement agencies of the Organization of the Islamic Conference began in Baku on April 21.  

Future cooperation among the OIC member states on combating organized crime, terrorism and transnational crime are expected to be discussed during the conference.

The OIC was founded in 1969. Azerbaijan was admitted to the organization in 1992. The OIC has 57 member states.

"Following withdrawal from the Soviet Union, Azerbaijan was expected to play effective role in reviving rich Islamic culture into which Azerbaijan has contributed," Ihsanoglu said.

He said Azerbaijan is also expected to contribute to spreading information about rich heritage of the Central Asian region together with Muslim neighbors in Central Asia and also to contribute to Islamic and world civilization.
