Iran looks forward to UK embassy in country to resume full activity

Iran seeks to cooperate with other world countries, the Islamic Republic’s foreign ministry spokeswoman, Marzieh Afkham said while outlining principles of Tehran’s diplomacy.

Afkham made the remarks during a press conference in Tehran on Aug. 25.

She added that Iran’s foreign policy is based on mutual respect and cooperation.

“Tehran has indicated its interactive approach in its diplomacy in the last two years,” the official said, adding Iran is ready to cooperate with all neighboring countries to safeguard regional security.

She further said that the Islamic Republic proved that disputes can be resolved via diplomacy, stressing that cooperation with Persian Gulf states is a priority for Iran.

The Islamic Republic considers that strengthening diplomacy can help settling regional problems, she added.

The spokeswoman said that the Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will launch a new round of regional tour to the neighboring and Muslim countries including Turkey, to discuss mutual issues and to seek solutions for ongoing regional crisis as well.

More information on the issue will be shared publish in the future, she underlined.

Afkham further touched upon reopening the UK embassy in Tehran and the Islamic Republic’s embassy in London, saying the process will continue till the embassies resume full activity.

She stressed that Iranian parliament has not banned reopening the UK embassy in Tehran.

The UK reopened its embassy in Tehran during an official ceremony attended by the British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond on Aug. 23.

The UK has had no diplomatic presence in Tehran since a group of protesters stormed the British embassy in 2011 and pulled down the UK flag. After that the UK closed the embassy, drawing action in kind from Iran.

Before the storming of the British embassy in Tehran, Iran’s parliament voted to downgrade bilateral relations from ambassadorial to the level of chargé d’affaires.

Tehran blames the UK for having agitated opposition in the wake of the disputed 2009 presidential elections, counting the student move as a self-organized reaction against UK interference in the Islamic Republic’s internal affairs.
