Media reports in Armenia on Uruguay's stance regarding the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict turned out to be baseless.

Hikmat Hajiyev, Acting Spokesman of Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry said the Armenian media outlets, especially azbarez.com website disseminated reports about a press conference on December 8. During the conference, according to the Armenian media, Armenian National Assembly's Speaker Galust Sahakyan asked an Uruguayan official whether Uruguay, which recognized the so-called "Armenian genocide", may become the first country to recognize the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh.

According to the reports, Uruguay’s Vice-President Danilo Astori answered the question, saying: "My country is working on it."

"Under the instruction of the Foreign Ministry, Azerbaijan’s diplomatic mission in Uruguay immediately appealed to Uruguay's Foreign Ministry calling for a clarification," Hajiyev said.

Uruguay's Ministry said that the matter was clarified by Danilo Astori. “Astori said that he didn’t make such statements and Uruguay's position on the conflict is to support a peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and negotiations by considering the interests of the conflicting parties,” Hajiyev added.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

As a result of the ensuing war in 1992, Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
