Trip of Uruguay MPs to Nagorno-Karabakh region condemned

19 November 2012 [11:35] - TODAY.AZ

The Azerbaijani Community of the Nagorno-Karabakh Region of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Public Union, has issued a statement condemning the visit of the Uruguayan parliamentary delegation from Yerevan to the occupied Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan.

In its statement sent to the Vice-President, Chairman of the General Assembly and Senate of Uruguay Danilo Astori, the Azerbaijani Community strongly condemned the act of the parliamentary delegation as damaging the bilateral relationship.

The statement says Armenia had occupied the Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan and seven surrounding regions over the past twenty years. The documents adopted by such international organizations as United Nations, Council of Europe, European Union, OSCE recognize the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan. It says Armenia had not so far honored the UN Security Council resolution demanding withdrawal of its troops from occupied lands. Occupation of Azerbaijani lands contradicts international norms and principles.

The statement says that the so-called "Nagorno-Karabakh Republic" is not recognized by any country and the visit of the parliamentary delegation is illegal.

The Public Union underlined that such visits derail peace talks and can seriously damage the future status and development of the region.
