Georgian Ministry of Fuel and Energy and National Oil and Gas Corporation are in “intense negotiations” with Azerbaijan on importation of natural gas by new terms after the agreement expired.
“Georgia is receiving natural gas from Azerbaijan through several delivery sources, including Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum Pipeline and at present Azeri gas flows to Georgia continuously,” said an official at the Georgian National Oil and Gas Corporation.
Alikhan Malikov, president of AzeriGaz, said Azerbaijan had halted gas exports to Georgia since January 6 while Georgian officials did not confirm the statement.
“Azeri gas continues to flow to Georgia as before. Maybe, it is not from AzeriGaz but other sources of Azerbaijan. However, gas is coming,” said an official.
Georgian officials believe that Azerbaijan will not overcharge Georgia for natural gas even in the new agreement and the prices will be lower than that of Russia.
Azerbaijan charges Georgia $120 while Russia is paid $235 per 1,000 cubic meters of natural gas.
Georgia’s annual demand for natural gas is 1.8 billion cubic meters.
