Georgian President can lose control over Intel service

26 December 2012 [15:23] - TODAY.AZ
The intelligence service will come away from the control of the Georgian president and will be subordinated to the government. In addition, the counter-intelligence service which is currently also controlled by the president, will be transferred under government control.

The relevant legislative package authorised by MP Irina Imerlishvili has already been initiated in the Georgian Parliament.

According to the proposed changes, the intelligence service is to be incorporated into the government and the Georgian National Security Council which is still subordinate to the president.

The head of this service will be appointed by the prime minister. At the same time, the government will also control the operation of service responsible for coordinating counter-intelligence.

It should be noted that today parliament will also consider the changes on reassigning the Security Service out of the President's control to go under the power of Georgian government.

President Mikheil Saakashvili intends to refuse the services of the state security forces in the case of the draft law being adopted.
