EU interested in Georgia’s European integration

The European integration of Georgia meets both the interests of the country itself, and the European Union, Chairman of the Georgian Parliament David Bakradze said on Wednesday after a meeting with President of European Council Herman Van Rompuy.

He said the meeting considered three issues - the EU-Georgia relations, security issues amidst the Russian-Georgian relations and parliamentary elections in Georgia, scheduled for autumn this year.

"We clearly decided that Georgia's European integration is the subject of mutual interest, and therefore considered the issues of negotiations on free trade, visa-free regime and the associated membership of Georgia in the EU," he said.

Bakradze emphasized that the role of European observers in ensuring security was noted at the meeting.

"We believe that the role of EUMM in ensuring security and stability in the region is very important and that it's necessary to expand the boundaries of monitoring," he said.

The chairman of the Georgian Parliament also noted that he discussed with Van Rompuy issues of holding democratic and transparent parliamentary elections.

"I expressed satisfaction that the EU will fund media monitoring and will present as many observers as possible," Bakradze said.'
