U.S government is working with Azerbaijan to realize Nabucco gas pipeline project, Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Philip H. Gordon said in Senate Foreign Relations Committee Hearing on "Georgia: One Year After the August War" on August 4.

He said Georgia is already a major part of Europe's energy plans.
"Some of us worked already within the previous U.S administration on the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline. This project has some parallels on Nabucco project now, including skepticism about whether it will ever be built. But then we believe this is going to be an additional energy corridor for Europe, and we support it. Mostly, politically - I mean, this is not something what costs U.S money or making investments - we play the role in terms of coordinating, controlling, working with governments and making it easy", Gordon said.
He also stated that if Europe will have an alternative energy route, it will less depend on Russia, which means there will be less political pressure from it.
"Ambassador Richard Morningstar was appointed U.S representative on energy issues in the region, and he is talking both to European participant countries of the Nabucco project and also the suppliers - Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and potentially Iraq to make this corridor more viable, so what was a dream before - is now delivering energy to Europe", Gordon said.
