Islamic Solidarity Games to involve 255 judo fighters from 32 countries

The 4th Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku is expected to see 255 judo fighters from 32 countries, said Tural Piriyev, Sport Manager for Judo in AISGOC. 

Piriyev said that the Judo and Blind Judo events within the Baku 2017 Islamic Games will be held at Heydar Aliyev Arena on May 13- 15.

“We’ll hold events among 7 weight groups in Judo and we are planning to have 3-4 weight groups in Blind Judo. We expect 225 athletes from 32 countries,” he said, adding that international NTO, ITO referees as well as national referees will monitor all events. 

Judo (Ju - meaning "gentle” and Do – meaning “way”) is Japanese martial art. It was created as a physical, mental and moral pedagogy in Japan, in 1882, by Jigoro Kano. 

Judo is one of the most developed kinds of sport in Azerbaijan, where the National Judo Federation was established in 1972.

The adult judo team of Azerbaijan made considerable progress in 2016. The team led by the Autsrian coach Peter Seisenbacher won 51 awards in competitions of various levels. His clutch includes 14 gold, 10 silver and 27 bronze medals. The Federation's results showed that Azerbaijani judokas won 351 times out of 710 fights during the year.

Piriyev further added that Baku will host Grand Slam Championships on May 10 and athletes from different countries will come Baku to struggle for international honoring.  

“Athletes who will participate in Baku 2017 Islamic Games will come to our country on May, 10. As a Sport Manager I believe in our national team and I hope for the best of results,” said Piriyev as he was interviewed by the official website of Baku 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games.

The Baku 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games is an exciting multi-sport event uniting the Islamic world, which will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan from May 12 to 22 2017.

Athletes from Islamic countries around the world will be representing their nations over 10 days of competition across 20 different sports which include 24 disciplines (Athletics and Para Athletics, Aquatics – Diving, Aquatics – Swimming, Aquatics – Water Polo, Basketball 3x3, Football, Gymnastics – Artistic, Gymnastics – Rhythmic, Wushu, Table Tennis, Handball, Judo and Blind Judo, Wrestling – Greco, Wrestling – Freestyle, Shooting, Tennis, Volleyball, Boxing, Zurkhaneh, Karate, Taekwondo and Weightlifting) in 16 state-of-the-art competition venues across Baku.
