Presidential Cup test rowing competition wraps up in Mingachevir

The Presidential Cup test rowing competition in academic, kayaking and canoeing categories held prior to the 2015 European Games wrapped up.

The event, which took place in Azerbaijan’s Mingechevir region at the “Kur” Olympic Training Center on April 3-5, has been held in the country for the eighth time.

Teams from Azerbaijan, as well as Georgia and Turkey took part in the three-day competition.

Azerbaijani rowers distinguished themselves during the event. The rowers representing Mingachevir brought 11 gold, 14 silver and 17 bronze medals, while rowers from Baku gained four gold, three silver and three bronze medals.

Georgian rowers competing in the 2000-2002, 1997-1999 and 23 and + categories won five gold, seven silver and four bronze medals.

Turkish sportsmen took six gold and three silver medals.

National rower, Vlad Nakonechni took two gold medals, competing in 1997-1999 and 2000-2002 categories.

Only two categories, kayaking and canoeing will be included in the list of Baku 2015 sports. The games in these categories will be held in Mingachevir.

Natig Abbasov, the vice-president of the Azerbaijan Rowing Federation and director general of “Kur” Olympic Training Center gave information about the preparation process to the 1st European Games.

The vice-president said that some 350 sportsmen will take part in the rowing sport. The Olympic village can host 1,500 sportsmen and trainers, he added. “All the conditions will be created for the competition. The federation has also purchased new boats in connection with the Games,” he said.

He voiced belief that the Baku European Games will not lag from Peking and London Olympiads.

Baku 2015 is the first ever European Games, an exciting and innovative multi-sport event for the continent which will take place from 12 – 28 June 2015.

There will be a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015 including 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports. More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.

Eleven of the sports will offer qualification opportunities for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Those sports include Archery, Athletics, Boxing, Cycling, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Triathlon, Volleyball and Wrestling.
