Baku 2015 European Games Athletics Competition Manager Maharram Sultanzade has been honored by the European Athletics Association for his hard works and dedication.

Sultanzade has received the prestigious European Athletics Coaching Award at the Golden Tracks gala dinner in front of invited guests including Lord Sebastian Coe, International Association of Athletics Federations Vice-President.

The award was given in recognition of his outstanding skills and achievements over a long and successful career as a world class international coach with experience in a number of different countries.

Chief Operating Officer of Baku 2015 Simon Clegg said: "Maharram is a perfect example of the human legacy of organizing the European Games and how it is changing people's lives, inspiring them to better themselves and develop new skills."

"In the last nine months, since Maharram moved from coaching athletes on the track to an office environment, he has excelled in everything he has done and become an invaluable team leader. His award is fully deserved and yet another example of the strength and expertise we are fortunate to have in our team here at Baku 2015," Clegg said.

It was the first time that an Azerbaijani national is awarded the European Athletics Coaching Award.

Sultanzade said: "I was very happy and extremely proud because it is the first big award from European Athletics for my country and me. As a coach, I prepared high-level athletes who achieved good results and also as a head coach of the national team in the last eight years, we achieved good performances at both World and European level."

He also recently helped train 150 officials to the standard of National Technical Officials and was Competition Director of the European Youth Olympic Trials in Baku in June, which received widespread praise from European Athletics.

At the Golden Tracks awards ceremony, French pole vaulter Renaud Lavillenie and sprinter Dafne Schippers of the Netherlands were named European Athletes of the Year.

Meanwhile, the Rising Star awards were won by sprinter Adam Gemili from Great Britain and high jumper Mariya Kuchina from Russia.
