Novruz bayrami to be held in New York next year

Novruz holiday will be held in New York in 2011, Secretary General of TURKSOY Dusen Kaseinov said.
According to Kaseinov, Novruz holiday is being marked globally, and is loved by different nations. To familiarize other nations with traditions of Novruz, this holiday will be celebrated in different countries, Kaseinov said.

Celebrated on the first day of spring, Novruz is the favorite holiday in Azerbaijan, and remains a strong tradition also in Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey and in Central Asia. It has a remarkable endurance and survival capacity, being of non Islamic origin it managed to retain its importance after the Arab conquest and in this century survived Soviet attempts to destroy it.

Usually preparation for Novruz begins a month prior to the festival. Each of forthcoming 4 weeks is devoted to one of the four elements and called accordingly in Azerbaijan.

Each Tuesday people celebrate the day of one of the four elements - water, fire, earth and wind. People do house cleaning, plant trees, make new dresses, paint eggs, and make national pastries such as shakarbura, pakhlava and a great variety of national cuisine. The holiday goes on for several days and ends with festive public dancing and other entertainment of folk bands and sport contests.
