Juvenile delinquency rate falls by 14-15% in Azerbaijan

The number of cases of juvenile delinquency is lower in Azerbaijan as compared to other CIS states.
The due announcement was made by Azerbaijani Deputy Interior Minister Asker Alekperov on Wednesday, according to Novosti-Azerbaijan.

"The Ministry works permanently with children, holds lessons for them. In the result of it, cases of juvenile delinquency have fallen in number by 14-15% or 130 crimes, through 2005-2007", he noted during a conference "Reforms in the sphere of juvenile justice", which started in Baku.

In turn, UNICEF representative in Azerbaijan Hana Singer announced that the main purpose of the system of juvenile justice is to secure children from imprisonment, as "anyway, they may grow into real criminals".

"International organizations and senior officials should be active in their work with children", Singer added.

It should be noted that the conference was attended by deputy minister of Justice Toghrul Musayev, deputy chairman of the State Committee for problems of family, women and children Sedaget Gahramanova, OSCE representative in Azerbaijan Hose-Luis Herrero, national coordinator of the UN Senior Commissariat on human rights Teymur Melik-Aslanov.
