06 February 2008 [10:24] - TODAY.AZ
Quarantine, declared in Nij village of Gabala due to the detection of African swine fever, will be stopped within a month after the prevention of disease.

Spokesman for the State Veterinary Service under Azerbaijan's Ministry of Agriculture Yolchu Khanveli told APA that 193 swines infected and suspected of infection with African swine fever were killed in Nij village from January 28 until February 3.

New facts of infection have not been revealed in the village in the last two days.

Khanveli noted that African swine fever has not been detected in other regions of the country.

The veterinary service demanded from all pig-breeding farms of Azerbaijan to transfer to exclusively close working regime. The State Veterinary Service plans to hold monitoring in connection with African swine fever in all pig-breeding farms.

Moreover, African swine fever was revealed in Georgia on June 7 and the service carried out 3 control arrangements in the pig-breeding farms of the country.

Currently, up to 20,000 pigs are being bred in the cattle-breeding farms of Azerbaijan. Along with Azerbaijan, the African swine fever has been detected in Georgia, Armenia and Russia's south.

African swine fever hits only swines. Symptoms include high temperature, damage of blood vessels and haematogenic organs. Animals die on the 2-5th day following infection. Treatment of such animals is prohibited.
